CCTV:
NorthStar Security's CCTV consultants are ready to assist with the design of a cost-effective video surveillance system for your business of home.  The cost of a high-resolution camera / hard drive recorder based camera system has dropped dramatically over the past few years.  We are seeing more and more homeowners install systems that only large businesses could afford until recently.

If you own a business of any size, you cannot afford not to have some level of video surveillance.  We are constantly evaluating camera distributors and suppliers in an effort to provide you with the highest quality equipment at the lowest prices. Give us a call - we think you will be surprised at how affordable a CCTV system can be.

CCTV systems consist of the following components:

- A DVR (digital video recorder)

- 1-16 cameras per DVR unit

- Appropriate cables and connectors

- High-speed internet and a static IP address is preferred for Remote Access (usually free option fromyour internet provider)

Features / Optional Equipment:

- 250GB to 1TB hard drives that store anywhere from 2 weeks to 3 months of video

- Continuous recording, alarm activated recording, or motion activated recording settings

- Remote access - view video from anywhere in the world

- PTZ (Pan, Tilt, Zoom) cameras with joystick type control available

- All-in-one 17" LCD monitor with built in 4, 9, or 16 channel camera capability, saves space and is very user friendly (great for residential applications)

- PC Based DVR systems

Things to look for when shopping for a CCTV system:

DVR:

Reliable/tested brand, the DVR will be the backbone of your surveillance system and, as we say with all CCTV equipment, you want to look for value, not neccesarily only for cheapest price.  Price is very important, but we want the unit to last and provide a reliable source of evidence in the event that the video is needed.  We think you will find that our time spent on product research reflects the best price/value combination of any local company.

Cameras:

-- 1/3" Sony CCD--

This is the heart of the camera and is what translates what the lens sees in video, Sony CCDs are the "standard" for CCTV applications and you will find that many companies sell inferior cameras with smaller 1/4" CCD chips at the same prices for higher profit margins,

-- Lens type and focal length --

Lenses range from 2mm to 50mm for most applications and the particular lens selection will determine how wide or narrow the camera's field of vision will be.  A camera covering an alleyway should have a completely different focal length than a camera that covers a parking lot.

-- Day/Night --

"Night Vision" can be handled by cameras in two ways, the first is with IR beams and the second is with a low lux capable lens or slow shutter feature. There are pros and cons to each depending on the application.

-- Wide Dynamic Range --

generally an upgrade option, WDR cameras provide a clear image in extremely bright environments or where glare is a problem.  It is generally used when it is important to distinguish minor details from a scene.

--IP based cameras --

IP cameras are integrated into a computer network and can provide true high definition video images, this is a new technology and generally reserved for commercial applications where image quality must be of the highest caliber.  Depending on the camera, still images pulled from the video are equivalent to those taken with up to a 10 megapixel digital camera.
