Fire:
Monitored fire detection is so often overlooked in the Security industry.  It is our opinion that this is every bit as important as the intrusion portion of your security system.  Regular smoke detectors located throughout your home are great but are a much more powerful tool when supplemented by monitored smoke detectors.  Your average smoke detector will wake you up in the middle of the night….but that’s about it.   What if you get trapped and cannot get out.  Do you want to rely on your neighbor to call for help?  What about when you are away at work, shopping, on vacation?  What about the Pets you love?  Unless you’ve trained them to use the phone and open doors so they can escape the fire and smoke, they are completely helpless in a fire situation. Our UL listed monitored smoke and heat detectors will get the help you need quickly.  We encourage you to contact your local fire department for more information about the potentially life saving features of monitored smoke and heat detectors.

Carbon Monoxide:
Yet another often overlooked feature that can easily be incorporated into your security system and can literally mean the difference between life and death.   Due to the adverse effects that Carbon Monoxide gas has on the human body, it may be difficult or impossible to get help on your own in such a situation. A monitored Carbon Monoxide detector is a good way to help eliminate this possibility so you and your family can get outside for fresh air safely before its affects render you helpless.

According to the US environmental Agency (EPA), the following are the most common sources of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning:

Unvented kerosene and gas space heaters; leaking chimneys and furnaces; back-drafting from furnaces, gas water heaters, wood stoves, and fireplaces; gas stoves; generators and other gasoline powered equipment; automobile exhaust from attached garages; and tobacco smoke.  Incomplete oxidation during combustion in gas ranges and unvented gas or kerosene heaters may cause high concentrations of CO in indoor air.  Worn or poorly adjusted and maintained combustion devices (e.g., boilers, furnaces) can be significant sources, or if the flue is improperly sized, blocked, disconnected, or is leaking.  Auto, truck, or bus exhaust from attached garages, nearby roads, or parking areas can also be a source.

If any of these apply to your household, please inquire about adding a Monitored Carbon Monoxide Detector to your security system.

Two-Way Voice Monitoring:
This feature seems to be the new trend within the security industry.  It is a great feature which allows the customer and the monitoring center to communicate without the use of a hand-held phone.  Although there are certain situations where this feature is invaluable (i.e. people who have limited mobility or customers with special needs), we at NorthStar Security feel this is an often oversold feature for many security applications.  Some will claim that this is the only way that the authorities will respond because this is the only road to a “verified alarm”.  Unfortunately this statement is just a marketing fabrication.  Sure, we’d love to capitalize on the additional revenue potential of marketing this as a must-have feature, but our best interest is always with the customer and we feel that in most situations, the benefits do not outweigh the extra cost.  However, we will gladly provide you with this service if you are in a situation that you feel requires the feature.  Please give us a call for more information on this feature if you are considering an alarm system based on this point alone.

Cellular Back-Up:
Our Digital Cellular back-up units are great for customers who don’t wish to purchase a land-line phone for their home.  They are essentially a device which can communicate with the Monitoring Station through the GSM cellular network.  It’s basically a cell phone for your alarm (but a little bit bigger).  There is usually an additional up-front cost for the unit itself and a slightly increased monitoring fee, but well worth it if you calculate your savings in the long run (since you don’t have to pay the high monthly fee for a land line from your local telephone provider).  It can also be used as a back-up to an existing land line.  If your regular phone system goes out for any reason, the security system will automatically switch to cellular communication and alert the monitoring station in the event of an emergency.
